Lorraine Sigurdson’s NDP story

I was not old enough to vote in 1969. My family had been NDP forever and I was old enough to become engaged and even watched the leadership convention on television. I will always remember my father, Gestur Sigurdson, coming home from the polling station in Hnausa and phoning in the results. When it became obvious that we were not only going to win in Interlake but in Manitoba he took my brother and I off to Poplarfield for the celebration. (My mom could not come as she was expecting m sister who was born less than a month later). It was a crowded and hot hall in Poplarfield with a handsome Billie Uruski soaked in sweat and shaking everyone's hand. It was a great (though not late ..we had to go to school the next morning) night.

Susan Hart-Kulbaba’s NDP story

The NDP is the reason I am married today. I was on the provincial executive and the Queen was coming to visit Manitoba in 1984. Howard Pawley ensured that the Executive was invited to the dinner being held in her honour at the Fairmont in Winnipeg. Another Executive member asked who I was bringing to the dinner and I said I wasn't seeing anyone right then and I thought I would simply come alone. I didn't think anything more about it until the week before the dinner my friend called and said he had a friend who would take me to the dinner. I was unhappy since I was not looking for a date but felt it would be embarrassing for this person if I said no so I gave my friend a piece of my mind but relented. So I went on a blind date to dinner with the Queen, found out that my date had been active in Ed Shreyer's campaign and enjoyed myself. My blind date and I have been together ever since and we married less than two years later. We continue to support the NDP and work on campaigns together.
